The New Orleans Women’s Health & Justice Initiative

Organizing Institute’ on Reproductive Justice

Presented by

SISTERSONG Women of Color Reproductive Health Collective

When: Saturday, January 26th

10:00 am – 4:00 pm

Where: 452 N. Broad Ave.

(The Children’s Defense Fund Office)

What’s This All About?: WHJI and SisterSong will lay out the reproductive justice framework, illustrating the connections between the human right to control one’s reproduction and the importance of organizing for the social conditions necessary (like affordable housing, living wages, quality education, responsible and accessible public services, economically safe communities, and freedom from personal and state violence) to realize those rights. Learn how reproductive justice is connected to other social, political, environmental, and economic justice issues you may work on or want to learn more about.

Women’s Health & Justice Initiative

The New Orleans Women’s Health & Justice Initiative (WHJI) will be sponsoring a series of ‘Organizing Institutes’ throughout 2008, focused on (1) examining and challenging all forms of gender and sexuality-based violence against women of color and poor women in our communities; and (2) developing grassroots strategies to equip those most disenfranchised by the medical industry with the means to control and care for their own bodies, sexuality, and reproduction. Topics will include:

* Developing Alternatives to Incarceration for Addressing Violence Against Women of Color;
* Reproductive Justice 101 & 102;
* The Feminization of Disasters; Understanding Law Enforcement Violence Against Women of Color and Trans People of Color;
* Black Women and Violence;
* Rape Culture and Sexual Violence,
* Women’s Health & Reproductive Technologies;
* Gender & Displacement; and
* Women, Poverty and Criminalization to name a few!

WHJI is committed to advancing a sexual health and reproductive justice movement in New Orleans that understands the impact of violence, poverty, gender inequalities, reproductive control legislation, trauma, coercive sterilization and dangerous contraception policies, and the harmful effects of toxic environments have on women’s health and well-being[1].

Our first Organizing Institute, scheduled for Saturday, January 26, 2008 at 1824 O.C. Haley Blvd (The Nonprofit Central Office) from 10:00 am – 4:oo pm, will be on Reproductive Justice 101. SAVE the DATE! Long time human rights activist, feminist, and reproductive justice organizer Loretta Ross of SisterSong Women of Color Reproductive Health Collective, will be leading the workshop.

For more information or to RSVP contact Mandisa Moore at 504-931-8482 or reply to smandisa85@yahoo.com.
